i have an a8n-e motherboard and i was wondering if this card would give any improvements over my on-board gigalan nic. i already have a good internet connection and sometimes under 10 of ping in bf2/2142. can it get better with this card and will it really take off some load of my cpu? do i absolutely need to have a router or an SMC EZswitch series or the NetGear GS series which can deal with jumbo frames to use this card properly?

Ask dale how much of an improvement this is. It should remove some remove the overhead from the CPU but only a few %. I am not sure which gigabit lan you have on your machine but my marvel chipset works well on my dfi ultra-d. Still to get that extra 2-5% (might be more but not much) from your CPU would increase performance a bit. You might also see some more ping stability. But what do I know I just build the machine not the network.

just an internet connection would never max out the bandwidth of the onboard LAN. But if networked to computers and you're doing file transfers, this card would be a better choice. As far as CPU utilization, i'm not too sure but I can't see it making a noticeable difference.

The onboard Marvell Yukon ethernet on the A8N-E already offers hardware checksum offload. For large file transfers on a network, the onboard ethernet should perform better since it is on a PCIe bus and not on a PCI bus, where it may compete with another card (e.g. Sound Blaster) for bandwidth.

Stick with onboard.

for bandwidth I agree PCIe is much better but PCI offers lower latency which decreases ping. I can see that ping is not an issue for you if you are getting 10 ping to a server so just stick with onboard.

Dedicated NIC > Onboard.
As for the onboard having hardware checksum offloading, that only works if you install the NV drivers, and we know how well those work.

After reading Dales review on the Killer NIC, he convinced me to look into this card. I have a ULI Network Controller. CPU is a AMD X2 6400 so I don't think offloading CPU will make a huge diff. Do you think this will improve latency in games? I know this $36 card was basically on par with the Killer nic.
