You should have went with a P35 instead of a P965 for a quad core, but since you'll get a Rev 3.3 DS3, I'm pretty sure that the quad core will boot just fine.

Phew, that's cool :)

I went for the DS3 because I was tight on budget, I exceeded it by 37$ already by choosing Q6600. Also, I already got to work with the DS3, and it was great.

I got nervous about the bios update :P - Even if it's G0 I won't need to update ?

If it is a G0, you may get a CPU microcode error when you boot. Everything will still work good enough to flash the BIOS to the newest version but the fsb and multiplier may be wrong.

If your DS3 is a Rev3.3, I suppose its shipped BIOS should be F10 or newer.
You should be fine to boot becouse Q6600 is still a FSB1066 CPU just with newer stepping that's all. I'd be a little more concerned with E6850 or alike that's FSB1333 AND G0 stepping.

I've even seen people with ES - engineer sample E6850 cpu boot and test OC-ability on P965 chipset mobo such as DS3 or alike.

However, P35 or even X35 that's going to be released in a couple month or so are a much better choice for Quads. The new chipset will unleash quad's OC-ability potential to another level.

DS3 isn't much cheaper than I paid roughly 3 month ago! I paid like 149 and now it's still 135. A entry level P5k-P35 chipset mobo is only like $20~30 bucks on top. In my mind, a 20~30 bucks difference for the additional benefit you get is def worth it.

But all in all, a DS3 rev3.3 should satisfy your need if you're not looking for something on the extreme side.

According to my shipment notice, I got a G0 ("SLACR") :-) Check your shipping notice people!! If you get it and it's not G0 (SLACR), you can refuse the shipment, and AFAIK NCIX will refund the purchase price for you (but not the shipping charges). So basically you'll pay the shipping charges both ways, but then you can place another order and hopefully get G0 next time around :-) My impression is that if your order was filled from this recent shipment of 1100 processors, you have a good chance to get a G0 part.

Personally I'm on air cooling, and since I want to OC from 2.4 up to 2.8 (or 3.0 if possible), I absolutely had to have the new stepping, to maximize my chances. I may also have to replace my CNPS9700NT with something better. Thankfully I have very good airflow in my case, that does help.

Anyway good luck to all, I hope you all get G0. I'm still blown away by what a good deal this is !!

If the *****Q6600SLACR is any indication, then my shipping notice also indicated a G0 stepping. We'll just have to see how it overclocks!

Please do post back your Q6600 "G0" OC results, no rush though, I know it can takes up to several weeks to get the best out of everything.

For sure I'll post my results as usual for references purposes.
I'll be getting a Q6600 tomorrow and hopefully it's an SLACR.
I'll replace my golden E6700 and test it on my current mobo/ram - P5K-Dlx and Ballistix tracers 8500. The rams can go 590~600mhz(~DDR2 1200) at 2.2v only 5-5-4-5 timings and the mobo is a perfect match for quads.
The only concern I may have will be the temp eventhough I've a Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme. Never get so optimistic at the begining though, this is the key

I received my shipment notification. It has - S/N: *******Q6600SLACR so it looks like there is a very good chance orders will be filled with G0's.

Update: received my Q6600 this morning. It is indeed a SLACR - marked on box and chip

Mine also specified SLACR on my invoice and I ordered saturday morning so I'm one of the early buyers :)

I'm now sure the stocks is G0 now since the old stock may be sold out for a long time.

My shipment just arrived and mine too is labeled SLACR on the box box and the chip. Very happy about that I didn't wait, however now I have to yet again take my computer apart, lol.

I use a Thermaltake Big Typhoon for cooling on my e6600 and that thing is a pain in the*****to install. In the end it will be worth it though.

I just received my Q6600, which I ordered over the weekend. It is a G0 - with 'SLACR' on the box and the chip. While I really don't plan to overclock it, it's going into a mATX box and I'm happy it might use a bit less power and run a bit cooler!

Yep, I just ran back from NCIX's retail store in Richmond, BC, Canada.
I bought the Q6600 CPU finally and it's a "G0" stepping.
Product code ends with SLACR
Batch# L723A765, July, 12 pkg date.

I checked all of their batches and all the stock they carry at the retail stores are all G0s! SLACR. So I believe the B3 were all sold out.

This is a great news guys :)

I'm very curious to hear what any overclockers are getting on non-premium HSFs, as in the Freezer, Noctua 9, Katana, or even stock...

Apparently someone posted an "official retail G0 Q6600 overclock thread" before I did this morning. So far only ONE guy report back his retail G0 Q6600 preliminary OC result, Dazog is his user name from XtremeSystems.

The good thing is that Dazog and I have the exact same batch, L723A765 and it seems that our batch is quite a good OC'er that does 3.2ghz at 1.32v loaded with a P5K-Dlx. I'm using a P5K-Dlx as well + Ballistix Tracers 8500 kit.

However something is wrong with his load temp reported at 85c loaded all 4 cores with 2 instance of Orthos using watercooling kit. The thread over there is getting hot every min. Please check here:

Looks like NCIX is the place for a Q6600 G0, I placed my order yesterday with the $500+. XS is going nuts with NCIX fever. :)

That's a great news guys.
Be sure to post back your OC results in a thread that I'll be creating soon and it's going to be the same title as appeared on XS.

I'm finally back home and have time right now.
What I'll do first is to lap my Thermalright Ultra120 Extreme's base to full copper and completely flat to maximize the heat dispensing capability for air cooling.

And then I'll get everything setup and ready to overclock.
I should have my preliminary OC result by midnight

Woot! gotta mention this again, I love cheap quad core thrills

S/N: BX80562Q6600SL9UM
B3 stepping.

Update:
I got 3.0 Ghz on my B3 rather easily. Cool, stable. I'm happy.

It is perfectly understandable that NCIX would have had some B3s remaining or possibly received a supplier's remaining stock of B3s in a new shipment.

I hope NCIX charges all you people who are refusing a perfectly working product a nasty restocking fee.

i'm shocked i even called hours ago and was hinted all shipment was G0

i feel being tricked, first all G0, now B3, have to admit a truly masterpiece of sales pitch, wondering how many people get B3 after G0 "confirmation"
