hello,

recently my computer is having some problems and im realllly hoping that it can be fixed without a re-install of windows or taking it in to get it fixed. basically im plaing a game usually for an extended period maybe 3-4 hours and suddenly everything freezes. at first when checking event viewer it said it was a keyboard driver with my g15(plan on buying a new keyboard tomorrow) but now every time i check event viewer when it freezes i get this

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
StarOpen

i asked ncix for some help and they did a hard drive test, video card test and another test possibly ram or PSU and everything passed without any problems and were last i remember at a loss as to the problem.

computer stats to follow:

Intel Core i5 2500K CPU & MSI P67A-GD80 SLI Motherboard
Samsung SH-S222A/BEBE 22X Dual Layer DVD Writer Black IDE OEM
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus Direct Touch 4 Heatpipe Heatsink AM2 AM3 LGA1366 LGA1155 LGA1156 120MM
Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9 Dual Channel Memory Kit
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM
windows 7 64 bit
Corsair TX850 V2 850W ATX 12V Single Rail 70A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 80PLUS Bronze
EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD SC Fermi 797MHZ 1280MB GDDR5 2XDVI Mini-HDMI DisplayPort PCI-
Coolermaster Haf 912 Black Mid Tower ATX Case 4X5.25 1X3.5 6X3.5INT No PS Front USB Sound

any help is greatly appreciated.

Could you be a bit more specific about the type of freeze you're encountering?

Is it a hard-lock? (Screen is frozen, mouse doesn't move - all you can do is power off)

Is it a game freeze? (Game locks up, but other Windows programs still run.)

Is the freeze temporary, or do you have to kill the process?

its always a hard lock, screen freezes, keyboard and mouse aren't working. most of the time my keyboard (lights up orange) dies and my mouse is still on (doesnt work though) but im sure its on batteries at that point and i have to power off. should mention too that when i shut my computer down (ive since stopped) it starts up and then when the 4 colours of windows are supposed to show up nothing happens and i have to restart, after i restart and start normally, everything is fine. not sure if it has anything to do with it or not.

sounds like hard drive problem with the rebooting.

sounds like ram with the freezing lock up.

and then using Western Digital lifeguard diagnostic tools everything seems to be good as well, the SMART status is pass and SMART data is all green checkmarks.

so i dont think its either of those but i dont understand any of them but the ncix tech didn't say anything about it being wrong/having a problem.

I think the easiest way is to just do a reformat and reinstall everything. I know it's a hassle, but it does fix most problems. The time you spent diagnosing the problem is probably longer then the time you would spend reinstalling your OS and softwares. You could also use an imaging software to clone your freshly installed system so next time when you have a problem, you could just restore it from the cloned image.

HDD failure doesn't cause hard locks. It causes BSOD's and other weird issues. Stuttering or long delays where nothing is responding.

What you're describing sounds like either the CPU, RAM, GPU, or Motherboard has an issue. (Basically anything but the HDD)

RAM and GPUs are most prone to failure - letting Memtest run a few times would be a good idea. And if you have a second GPU onhand, swap yours out and see if it makes a difference.

http://www.memtest.org/

Most of my hard locking issues were caused by unstable CPU overclocks. CPUs are a tad harder to test. If you're overclocked, back it off a bit and see if it helps. If you aren't, go into your BIOS and turn off anything that adjusts clockspeed. (Speedstep, C1E, Cool & Quiet, etc.)

well i did the HD, GPU and RAM tests and posted the results above and everything seemed fine so maybe its the mobo or cpu. will run the memtest tonight and post results when i get home. i dont overclock at all, im not sure how to overclock and i do not have a second GPU to test unfortunately. if i can figure out how to get into bios and maybe i can try VERY CAREFULLY since i dont know what im doing to turn off anything that adjusts the clock speed. i did buy a new keyboard and it still froze last night during gameplay so that wasn't an issue.

It did in my case. The whole system seized up solid and then refused to boot. It ended up being caused by one of the drives in my (on-board) disk array. It came back to life and I was able to repair the filesystem but within a week the drive was completely toast.

Philip, does the sound hang as well? Like CD skipping over the same half a second over and over? I am having a very similar issue with a EVGA 570 HD. I am beginning to suspect the sound card they have built in, because it's totally fine with my old GTX 275. I have 2 570's and the problem persists with either card individually or both together. Evga support pointed my in the HD audio device direction.

yThe Pursuit - nope, everything just dies basically. i played all day today and it didn't freeze but it did it last night once. im going to run LinX again because i have no idea how to use memtest even though i burned it to a disc.

To run memtest:
1. Burn to disk
2. Put disk in drive
3. Restart
4. Boot from disk
5. Go to sleep or watch progress bar for 8 hours
6. If there is errors you most likely have bad ram
if there is not then it may be something else but still don't rule out ram.
7. Post results here

Be sure to run at least 5 passes, more is better. Just run it before you go to bed and check on it when you wake up.
If there are errors they will normally pop up right away but not always.

im not the most intelligent person with technology, how do you boot from disc? i tried just putting it in, restarting and going into bios but from there i was lost, also for some reason my keyboard didn't work when i went into the bios which was kinda strange.

i tried to run linx on the weekend but it took 20 hours, thats ridiculous seeing as the first time it was done in less than 8 hours, gotta find the other program the ncix tech recommended and try that one instead.

Once in the bios, look for the tab that says" boot",or "boot options" change boot order/priority to cd drive first, save and quit.
